"I've been looking for something creative I could do that would take my mind off the chronic pain that continues to be a challenge for me. I had a few spare socks around the house and decided to experiment with making sock animals. I started with Canadian animals: moose, bear, elk, beaver and when I showed a few friends, they sold out right away. I use plain socks for the base of the animal and then add colourful sock cuffs for sweaters and felt for the eyes and ears. I like to keep them simple, without a lot of moving parts so they last longer and can be thoroughly loved. Now, my sock creations are featured in local shops in Edmonton, Jasper, AB, Vancouver Island, Whistler, BC and online sales with ETSY. I also enjoy commissions and like a good challenge, so if you have something in mind, send me a note!"  Heather Hyashi,  Rhythms of Grace

Inuit Wall Hanging by Winnie Ohokak

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
37199 $800.00 0 $0.00

No Winning Bidder

VALUE: $2500

Donated by Elizabeth Thomas

This very special piece was donated to Pilots N Paws Canada just for this auction.

With its vivid colours and clever depiction of iconic images of the north, it peaked our curiousity to learn more about it.  After a great deal of research we found information about the artist and decided to share what we learned with you.

As you will read on the image we provide, Winnie was well loved and produced many of these hangings that now reside in homes around the world.

We hope you will enjoy seeing this special example of Inuit Art.

We had  it assessed by several Art Galleries from Ontario through to British Columbia who were familiar and dealt in the sale of Inuit Art.   So as this is the most expensive item in our auction and we hope to have it go to someone who will truly appreciate having this in their home, we have put a reserve that respects its artistry.

Ode to Winnie Ohokak

A few weeks ago, a dear friend passed away in Cambridge Bay, Winnie Ohokak.

Her passing was sad and silent, and I haven’t stopped thinking about her ever since.  Who was Winnie Ohokak?

She was not a politician, she was not an executive, she was not an administrator nor an employee, nor was she in charge of anything.  And yet, to me, Winnie was and is a legend.

Winnie was a sewing ‘machine.’  A woman of talent, a creator, a major contributor to Cambridge Bay’s artistic community.  Her hand-sewn wall hangings are known around the world.  Yes, around the world.

I fell in love with Winnie’s wall hangings 15 years ago when she was a student of mine at Arctic College.  I fell in love with Winnie’s wonderful sense of humor and giggle around that same time.  She was a joy to be around.

Over the 15 years that I have known Winnie, I have managed to acquire almost one of every wall hanging design that she created.  I couldn’t get enough of them and I was not alone.

Many times over the past years, when she could not keep up with the demand for her wall hangings, she would call me and see if I had any to spare.  I always did, and I thank God that I always made sure to get more.

Dear Winnie.  You have enriched so many lives.  I look at you every day on one of my walls at home or work and you always manage to make me smile.

Thank you Winnie.  Thank you for enriching my life.  May you rest in peace.

8 x 10 Giclee Print,

"Sheltie Spring" by Heather Anderson

This sable Sheltie puppies giclee print has an image size of 8" x 10".

"I love Springtime and apple blossoms. The three sable Sheltie puppies I have painted in "Sheltie Spring" are exploring and enjoying this annual happening too. We all need to take time to stop and smell the roses or apple blossoms."

This Sheltie art giclee print ( created from my hand drawn original watercolor painting) is on Arches acid-free watercolor paper with Epson high quality ink and I have retouched it by hand with watercolor pencil to bring out every sparkling detail. I spray each print with a protective fixatif. It is shipped matted (white or cream) in a clear protective sleeve directly from me to you.

Cowichan style sweater for Child

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
37041 $50.00 9 $100.00

Winning Bid Amount

$100.00

VALUE: $70

Donated by Michelle Campos of Okotoks Alberta

Visit Michelle's shop here: saintpierre

Michelle has so kindly been donating to our auction from the beginning and her sweater designs keep on getting better and better.

Michelle's sweaters are designed and created by using a combination of domestic machine knitting and hand knitting in a smoke-free, pet-free home.

"Over the past three years, I have tried to develop an Etsy store that is unique. I love knitting and I love trying out new designs and patterns. As my experiences in life change, it seems, so does my knitting.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to take a needlework course at Hampton Court Palace, in England, from the Royal School of Needlework.

Although I have undertaken a large and intricate needlework project, it is mostly to my knitting that I have applied these new skills, by adding a variety of patterns and lettering in my sweater and stocking designs.

I also find that as my sons' interests change, so do the toys I knit. Requests for knitted animals, rockets, robots, and anything they can think up keep me experimenting with new challenges and designs. It's a joy to see their faces light up as projects take shape."

Congratulations Michelle on celebrating your 3rd year as well making your very Canadian sweaters for children!

N.B. The sweater can only be made before October or after January as the months are crazy crazy busy with orders as you can imagine. So be sure to get your order in asap if you are the lucky winner of this homemade sweater!

Downton Abbey Board Game

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
36727 $15.00 1 $15.00

Winning Bid Amount

$15.00

VALUE: $45

Donated by Dr. Pat Kincaid

The fast moving game that transports you in to the world of Downton Abbey. As a maid or footman, you have to complete the tasks you are given as quickly as possibly. Starting in the Servants' Hall, each player is dealt Destination cards which have varying values indicated by the number of bells on the card. This relates to how important or difficult the task is. The players must then navigate their way around the corridors and stairs of the Abbey, throwing the dice to determine how many moves they can make. Once they reach the destination of a task, they collect their bell tokens, and the next player throws the dice to set off for the next job. But nothing is that simple! Along the way, a player can land on a 'Carson Card' space and have to take a card, which could either help or hinder them. On other spaces, the player may have to collect a 'Letter' which could call them away from the Abbey, slowing them down or costing them bells! And which route will they take? A short easy looking one to get a job done earning only one bell, or a longer route with the possibility of collecting a higher reward? The winner is the player who has completed all their jobs and collected the most bells. Good luck and enjoy the game!

This sweet little bunny is made of sterling silver, with a brushed satin finish. This is one of our smaller designs, measuring about 1/2" tall. TINY, simple and super cute!

"Welcome to our whimsical world!

The pieces we sell in our shop all our own original designs.

The way we work is to create master designs using traditional silversmithing techniques (this takes hours and hours of painstaking work).

A mold is made of the master, and the pieces are then cast in sterling silver using the lost wax method.

A lot of work goes into grinding the castings smooth, then giving them soft brushed finish, and we personally do all of that in our workshop in Montreal, Canada.

Our creations are made to last, however, sterling silver is subject to tarnish and may require a bit of cleaning from time to time.

Exposure to oxygen is what causes the tarnish, so it helps to keep your jewellery in a ziplock bag when you aren't wearing it.

We have found the easiest way to clean sterling silver is with a paste of baking soda and water, or with a silver polishing cloth.

VALUE: $150

Donated by Red Canoe Brands

We are so happy once again to be able to offer this very Canadian RCAF Flight Bag thanks to the support from Red Canoe Brands. Did you know that A portion from the sale of their products goes to support RCAF Veteran and Canadian DND aviation related initiatives?

Description

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) was born on April 1st, 1924. Early tasks focused on civil air operations including forestry patrols, surveying and anti-smuggling. When the call to arms came in September 1939, Canada’s youth dutifully joined the cause. By 1944, the RCAF reached its peak strength of 215,000 men and women – making it the fourth largest air force in the world. Air force personnel served proudly under the RCAF Roundel(the original design of which is featured on this product)in both peace and war times.

-------------------------

We love the story of how Red Canoe Brands started.

Red Canoe was Born in a Bush Plane!!!

In 1999 Red Canoe was conceived in a bush plane over the pristine wilderness of Northern Ontario.

The imagery, romance and heritage of the unique lifestyle this form of travel represents are hard to express. Those that live it carry forward a tradition of the Canadian pioneers who pushed the limits of possibility in the face of all the adversity our rugged landscape could muster.

Sudbury Ontario native Dax Wilkinson grew up with these experiences but had been transplanted to the big city of Toronto. While the aspiring entrepreneur and designer developed products for different brands, close friends from home were becoming professional Bush Pilots.

A treasured invitation from one such friend for a flight in a deHavilland DHC-2 Beaver led to a ‘flashbulb moment.’ The pilot compared his plane to a passing Harley Davidson…. The sound was comparable but better. The passion that owners and enthusiasts happily expressed was equal. The utility of the machines and their relative impacts on Canada were quite different; the DHC-2 was the tool by which much of the Canadian landscape had been made accessible.

The deHavilland Beaver is a remarkable example of Northern Canadian ambition. The land’s unique requirements inspired a design that would allow expansion of Canadian possibilities. The increased utility of this rugged aircraft changed our country forever.

Wilkinson decided to create a product line inspired by Canadian icons with great stories like the DHC-2 Beaver. Many of these stories were unknown, fading from memory or taken for granted. Those few individuals that knew them well would welcome any banner that invited the uninitiated to take interest.

A Red Canoe could be thought of as the Great, Great Grandfather of the DHC-2 Beaver and the ultimate symbol of pure, simple, idyllic, rugged, hard working Canadian lifestyle. And so the company name was born.

We delved further into Canadian stories and worked to include icons like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), CP Railway and many others. We hoped to share their histories and find ways to support and preserve their respective traditions and legacies.

Our cousins to the south loved the idea and wanted to share their stories too. We dug in and found that we had a lot in common with them. A growing list including Cessna Aircraft Co., the Boeing Company, Bell Helicopters, Lockheed and North American Aviation continues to inspire us to tell incredible stories and keep on exploring.

Take a look at Lori's shop here: BrasdOrFlagShop

In our search for different and unique Canadian items, we found Lori who custom makes flags for boats.  We thought it very cool and contacted her about creating something for PNPC.  To our delight, Lori had only just read about our organization the night before!!! KISMET!  Lori was happy to make something special up for our auction.  Lori is also a supporter of Elder Dog Canada.

Description:Flags are handmade with high quality materials that will be sure to withstand the marine environment for several boating seasons. Flags are made with 200 Denier Nylon which is UV resistant and rot resistant. Grommets are nickel coated brass to prevent rusting. During fabrication, care is taken to ensure seams are strong to prevent fraying. FrayStop© is also applied to all raw edges as extra protection against fraying. The hoist is reinforced to ensure great shape and a strong attachment point for the grommets. Designs are stitched appliqué style.

Thank you Lori for such a positive response and a nifty flag!

Wonder if this would work on a plane or a car?

Only pet owners truly understand the sacred bond that forms between an owner and their pet. Let’s face it; we love our pets. They’re our children and we smother them with love, affection and toys. Why wouldn’t we want to commemorate them? 3D printing allows for us to create highly detailed, personalized models quickly and at a reasonable rate.

Having a picture is nice but capturing their true essence can be difficult through a camera lens. With a physical model, you can admire the tiny folds in their ears and little smiles. Remember them forever as only you saw them. We will take your photographs and turn them into realistic replicas of your beloved pet. Whether your pet is living or has passed on, the models help capture the true essence of what makes them special and allows you to immortalize them in a very distinctive way.

Tree Huggers

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
36860 $20.00 0 $0.00

No Winning Bidder

VALUE: $40

Donated by Jill Moss, the inventor of Tree Huggers

Don’t you just love camping on those lazy warm summer days, sitting back, relaxing, sun shining…life is great until…you look over and see that your 4 legged friend has managed to get their lead tangled up for the 257th time?

Every time they investigate all those great sounds and smells, they manage to dump the food and water dishes as if it was some kind of mission to drive us pet-parents crazy!

After the 4th or 5th time, you wise up, relocate the dog to a different spot, only to see that they manage to do the same thing, over, and over again. It’s a level of insanity that will quickly rob anyone of their peaceful attempt at relaxation in the great outdoors.

Last summer, I was sitting aroundwhile camping, and Lily, our beloved Wheaton Terrier, had again tipped her water bowl over.  I was at my wits end and thought, why doesn’t someone make bowls that hang from trees?

In a flash it hit me!  Hawt Diggity Dog I should invent them!  Bowls that sit snuggly on the side of a tree so that no matter how many laps Lily wants to do around that tree, she won’t be able to tip her bowls over! It was as if the clouds parted and the birds started singing. I quickly got to work on designing Tree Huggers to save all our fellow pet-parents from a similar mind numbing, aggravating vacation.
